Tutorial and Short Survey Papers now accepted by ACM TORS
Sharing an update from ACM Transactions on Recommender Systems (TORS): the Author Guidelines were revised to include two additional paper types that we’d like to encourage the community to use—tutorial papers and short survey papers (as a form of opinion/perspectives).
Tutorial papers are meant to make important subtopics more accessible, especially when an area is moving quickly or has become technically dense. The goal is not just to report new results, but to help readers understand the concepts, assumptions, and current best practices in a structured way. Authors are also encouraged to provide stable supplementary material (e.g., slides, videos, hands-on resources in a permanent repository), so the tutorial can serve as a lasting reference beyond the paper itself.

Short survey papers aim to fill the space between full-length surveys and traditional opinion pieces. They should still provide a substantial synthesis of the relevant literature, but with a narrower, more focused scope—particularly suited for emerging subareas where a full systematic review may be premature. Importantly, they allow authors to take a reflective stance (e.g., highlighting methodological issues or open gaps), while remaining evidence-based and constructive.
